The British artist turns political unease, muted voices, and dub pressure into two tightly controlled tracks for ROHS! Records.

Sam Ashton has never been one for loud statements, but his work as Tharn has always carried an underlying tension that his ambient project, Fortresses, tends to soften.

Moving between London and Portland, Oregon, Ashton has spent years tuning into the quiet mechanics of his surroundings: rainfall, damp air, distant voices, and the slow decay of tape. On his new two-track EP, ‘Speak,’ released through ROHS! Records, that background noise starts to feel far less neutral.

Where his previous releases on Crossfade Sounds often felt like private field studies of the Pacific Northwest, ‘Speak’ turns its attention outward. It taps into the low hum of anxiety many people have been carrying lately. Political and social noise seems to leak through the floorboards, no matter how quiet the room might be.

The title track does not force its drama. It builds pressure through restraint. A slow, thumping pulse sits beneath worn dub chords, faint tape hiss, and muffled voices that resemble a television playing in another room.

There is a physical weight to the mix, but the track never breaks open or offers a clean release. It remains suspended between calm and unrest, letting the discomfort sit there without explanation.

‘Arc’ creates slightly more space. Ambient guitar tones swell through fractured vocal fragments, while distant percussion provides a loose sense of direction. It feels less like a story than a fading memory. Elements surface, blur, and disappear before they can fully take shape.

Ashton keeps the production lean across both tracks. The low end carries weight without clouding the mix, while the upper frequencies retain a soft analog grain. Gio Conti’s mastering at Artefacts Mastering gives the EP depth without stripping away its worn edges.

Running just under eleven minutes, ‘Speak’ does not attempt to resolve the tension it creates. It captures a precise modern feeling: searching for a moment of peace while knowing the world outside is anything but quiet.
