Ibiza’s Consell d’Eivissa has proposed a freeze on new nightclub licences as part of its upcoming Tourism Areas Intervention Plan, known as the PIAT.
The measure would prevent further expansion of the island’s nightlife sector while protecting venues that already hold legal licences. First Vice President Mariano Juan confirmed that the proposal does not include plans to close existing clubs.
“The proposal aims to contain the existing nightlife,” Juan said. “We believe there is already enough nightlife in certain areas and no more licenses should be granted.”
Most Ibiza municipalities, except Sant Josep, have restricted the opening of new nightclubs through local regulations for the past 15 years. The PIAT would extend the prohibition across the entire island.
The proposal emerged during a council debate about illegal parties, with PSOE spokesperson Elena López calling for sanctions against organisers and anyone collaborating with unauthorised events.
