Björk has announced the worldwide release of ‘Björk Orkestral With the Hamrahlíð Choir’, a live album documenting performances recorded at Harpa Hall in Reykjavík in 2021.
Initially released in May as an exclusive at the National Gallery of Iceland, the recording will receive a broader physical release on November 27th, 2026, through One Little Independent.
The album primarily features new arrangements of material from Björk’s 2004 record ‘Medúlla’, revisiting compositions originally built around the human voice.
The performances were developed through extensive rehearsals during the COVID-19 period, when changes to regular touring schedules provided additional time to explore the relationship between vocal arrangements and electronic music.
Björk reflected on the extensive preparation behind the concert, expressing her pride in the project and the collective effort involved. She explained that the rehearsals during the COVID-19 period gave her the opportunity to explore the relationship between human voices and electronic music, a balance she considers central to her artistic philosophy. The process also allowed her to revisit older compositions and refine their live arrangements in ways she had not previously been able to achieve.
The artist also acknowledged the contributions of musical director Bergur Þórisson and Þorgerður Ingólfsdóttir, founder of the 50-member Hamrahlíð Choir.
The original concerts also supported Kvennaathvarfið, a women’s shelter in Reykjavík, through their proceeds.
