Australian producer HARLEY GIRL has released his latest single, ‘I Know The DJ’, a playful, rhythm-driven track that began with an unexpected discovery in his collection of unfinished recordings.
The idea emerged when HARLEY GIRL revisited a folder of vocals sent by creative collaborator Callie Reiff approximately a year earlier. Among the recordings, the phrase “I know the DJ” caught his attention and became the foundation of the production.
Working around the vocal, the producer experimented with cuts, grooves, and rhythmic arrangements, developing a track that combines a playful attitude with tougher electronic elements.
Reflecting on the creative process, HARLEY GIRL explains: “This one started with a bit of a digital crate dig through my own hard drive. I found a folder of vocals that a new creative friend Callie Reiff had sent over about a year ago for a half-baked demo I hadn’t managed to finish. I flicked through and found the phrase ‘I know the DJ’. I dropped the take in and played around with cuts and grooves, etc. I think the most exciting part for me was just finding the vocal – I feel as if the whole track painted itself for me before I’d started making it. It had to be silly, self-aware and a little bit tough – and I feel it landed in that sweet spot.”
